Globe Valves and Gate Valves in Industrial Fluid Control Systems,in industrial fluid control systems, globe valves and gate valves are two of the most common types of valves. Although both are used for opening, closing, and controlling media in pipelines, they differ significantly in design structure, working principle, and application scenarios.
1. Globe Valve
Core Structure
A globe valve consists of a valve body, a bonnet, a valve stem, a valve disc (disk-shaped or conical), and a valve seat. The interior of its valve body features an “S”-shaped flow passage, and the valve disc realizes opening and closing through the vertical lifting movement of the valve stem.
Typical Characteristics
The valve seat is perpendicular to the axis of the flow passage, forming a 90° diverted flow path.
The sealing surface is usually flat or conical, making tight contact with the valve disc.
Working Principle
When the handwheel is rotated clockwise, the valve stem drives the valve disc to move downward. The valve closes after the disc comes into contact with the valve seat. When rotated counterclockwise, the valve disc is lifted, and the medium flows from below the valve seat. The lifting stroke of the valve disc has a linear relationship with the flow rate, enabling precise flow regulation.
2. Gate Valve
Core Structure
A gate valve is composed of a valve body, a bonnet, a valve stem, a gate plate (parallel or wedge-shaped), and a valve seat. The interior of its valve body has a straight-through flow passage, and the gate plate completely separates from or covers the flow passage via the vertical lifting movement of the valve stem.
Typical Characteristics
The flow passage is aligned with the axis of the pipeline, with no flow direction change.
Working Principle
When the handwheel is rotated clockwise, the valve stem drives the gate plate to move downward until it completely covers the flow passage to close the valve. When rotated counterclockwise, the gate plate is lifted, allowing the medium to pass through unobstructed. The gate valve has a long opening and closing stroke and is only suitable for fully open or fully closed operations, not for throttling and regulation.
